In Loving Memory of Lena Cameron
March 10, 1954 - August 17, 2023
Lena Cameron, a remarkable woman whose journey began in Laurel, Mississippi, peacefully passed away at her Jacksonville, Florida home on August 17, 2023, surrounded by the love of her family. Her indomitable spirit persevered even in the face of a severe heart failure diagnosis in late July 2023.
Born to Myrtle Jean Moody on a March day in 1954, Lena's life was shaped by the unwavering love of Sylvester and Leola Cameron, who raised her in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. After graduating from Hattiesburg High School in 1972, Lena's thirst for knowledge led her to earn her bachelor's degree from Nova Southeastern University in 2002. Lena navigated the waters of marriage and divorce twice, but her legacy extends far beyond these chapters.
Lena embodied generosity, greeting life with an infectious smile and a heart full of compassion. Her love was evident in her devotion to her children – her son, Quentin, and her daughters, Shanna and Toryah. Her adventurous spirit ignited a passion for exploration, prompting her to crisscross the globe.
Lena's professional journey was a tapestry woven with dedication. She began her career as a telephone operator at Bell South, later AT&T, embarking on a journey that took her from Biloxi, Mississippi, to Jackson, Mississippi, and then to Stone Mountain, Georgia. Settling in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1991, Lena retired in 2007 after an illustrious 30-year tenure. Even in retirement, her commitment to service burned bright as she became a FEMA Reservist, aiding families affected by the devastating 2023 Rolling Fork tornado.
Lena was more than a world traveler; she was a citizen of the world. She reveled in the joy of line dancing, the thrill of a casino slot machine win, and the enchantment of musicals. Her heart's truest desires, however, lay in her global sojourns. From living in West Germany for two years alongside her Air Force husband to teaching English in South Korea after her AT&T retirement, Lena's thirst for life knew no bounds.
Post-retirement, Lena's journey soared to new heights. Working with airlines and FEMA, among others, Lena fulfilled her dreams by traversing oceans, continents, and cultures. Her love for cruises was unrivaled, and her companions on these voyages varied from family to friends to solo exploration. Her footprints graced the soils of countless nations, including China, Cuba, Japan, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, and more.
Lena's memory lives on through her son, daughters, cherished sisters and brothers, cousins, and friends who were family. She leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and boundless exploration. In the tapestry of her life, Lena Cameron's thread will forever weave stories of adventure, compassion, and an irrepressible zest for life.
Lena, your spirit soars as you embark on your greatest journey yet. May your smile continue to brighten our days, and may your love for life inspire us to live each day with the same fervor that you did. Rest in Peace, dear Lena, for you will be profoundly missed but never forgotten.
In this time of remembrance, we wish to honor the memory of our beloved Lena Cameron. As per her wishes, Lena's journey has led her to a private farewell. She found solace in simplicity, and so her closest loved ones will gather in a quiet tribute to celebrate her life.
In lieu of flowers, we kindly request that you consider making a donation in Lena's memory to organizations that held a special place in her heart: Mended Hearts and Jacksonville Humane Society. Your contribution will continue her legacy of compassion and caring.
Cards of condolence can be sent to Toryah Cameron at 9997 Rosewood Glen Lane, Jacksonville, Florida 32219.
Crevasse's Simple Cremation is honored to serve the Cameron family.

Lena and me was friends that met in Hattiesburg years ago and reunited last year and until I heard of untimely passing. I will forever remember the long talks and eating out and how she loved the carrot cake I shared with her when she visited me at my moms house last year. I could go on about our friendship but she was a true, true friend. I miss her. If any of the children need to talk just call me at: 414-530-0713. Love you all.

My Prayers and Condolences are extended to the Family of Our Dear Classmate, Lena Cameron, who was indeed a “ray of sunshine” for Our Class. I was blessed to fellowship with Lena during a Class Cruise in December 2016, and during Class Reunions in 2017 and 2023. We are thankful for all the hours that Lena devoted to ensure that Our 50th Reunion was a success. In addition, the Members of the Class of 1972 are so Thankful for the beautiful umbrellas that Lena designed and gave to each of her classmate during our 50th Class Reunion in July 2022. We will cherish these purple and gold umbrellas and keep them as keepsakes and reminder of Our Dear Classmate, Lena Cameron.
